€5 – 70th Anniversary of the Start of the EOKA Liberation Struggle

The Central Bank of Cyprus has issued a silver collector coin with a nominal value of €5 in exemplary condition, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the EOKA liberation struggle (1955–59).

According to the CBC announcement, the collector coin depicts the Deputy Leader of EOKA, Grigoris Afxentiou, framed by laurel branches. Afxentiou died on 3 March 1957, when British forces set fire with gasoline to the hideout where the hero was located, in Machairas.
