Glaciers play a very important role in the Earth’s climate and the water cycle. Sixty-eight percent of the planet’s freshwater is trapped in snow, ice, and glaciers, which together form the Earth’s cryosphere. With global warming, glaciers—which contain about 2% of the Earth’s total water—are melting and retreating, and the cryosphere as a whole is shrinking very rapidly, with serious consequences for the climate, the environment, the preservation of human well-being and health, and sustainable development. Phenomena such as localized declines in agricultural production, water scarcity, and rising mean sea level are already being observed.
The United Nations’ initiative to proclaim 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation aims to highlight the importance of glaciers for the planet’s climatic balance, as well as the economic, social, and environmental impacts of the forthcoming changes in the Earth’s cryosphere. It emphasizes the urgent need for action and sustainable measures to protect glaciers, through cross-border cooperation and integrated management at all levels.
