Fishing is an ancient human activity that today has changed to a great extent thanks to technological advances and the involvement of large enterprises. At the same time, however, millions of people around the world are engaged in traditional small-scale coastal fishing or small-scale aquaculture. In recognition of their contribution to meeting the nutritional needs of the global population, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2022 as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture.
The celebration aims, on the one hand, to highlight globally the role of these workers in food security, poverty eradication, and the sustainable use of natural resources, thereby strengthening actions to support them, and on the other hand to encourage small-scale fishers and aquaculture farmers themselves to unite and amplify their voice in decision-making centers that affect them. Greece participates in the celebration as a country with a long fishing tradition, given that small-scale coastal fishing has particular economic and social importance for local communities, while also having a low environmental footprint.
