Περιγραφή
The Archimedes’ screw is an ingenious invention that was used to lift and transfer water from a low point to a higher one. It is said that Archimedes invented it during his stay in Egypt, evidently having in mind the need to transport water from the Nile for the irrigation of crops.
It consists of a helical shaft enclosed within a cylindrical tube. The screw is positioned at an incline to the ground and, as it is rotated manually or mechanically, water becomes trapped and is carried upward to the top of the structure, where it is released and feeds irrigation channels. The invention is described by the Roman architect Vitruvius, while according to Diodorus Siculus it was also used for draining water from mines. The simplicity and ingenuity of the mechanism made it timelessly popular, and it continues to be used today in similar applications.
