Περιγραφή
Thales (c. 624–540 BC), who was born in Miletus of Ionia, was the first known Greek mathematician, the first Greek philosopher, and one of the Seven Sages of antiquity. Thales considered water to be the fundamental principle of all things, in the spirit of natural philosophy that he himself initiated, which sought to explain phenomena through natural processes rather than mythological interpretations. He was engaged in cosmology, astronomy, physics, and geometry. The Theorem of Thales, also known as the theorem of proportions, is particularly well known. It is said that he was able to calculate accurately the height of the pyramids of Egypt, and he also predicted the solar eclipse of 585 BC.
According to a tradition, one day he was so absorbed in his astronomical observations that he fell into a well. The significance of Thales’ personality is immense, as with him both European philosophy and the scientific study of natural phenomena through the use of mathematics were inaugurated.
