Περιγραφή
Charles Fabvier (1782–1855) was a distinguished officer of the French army. He served under Napoleon and took part in his campaigns. After being dismissed following the restoration of the monarchy, in 1823 he decided to come to Greece to support the Greek struggle for independence, persuading many experienced Bonapartist veterans to follow him. After the destruction of the Battalion of Philhellenes under Charles Norman, Fabvier undertook the organization and training of a regular corps, which distinguished itself in many battles. He learned to speak Greek fluently and was highly esteemed by his soldiers. He was perhaps the most sincere and selfless philhellene.
In a daring operation, on 30 November 1826 he broke through the siege of the Acropolis in order to resupply its defenders and remained there until its surrender in 1827. As a token of gratitude for his services, the Third National Assembly of Troezen granted him Greek citizenship in the same year, while later King Otto honored him with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Redeemer.
