One hundred and eight years after their first modern revival in Greece, the Olympic Games returned to their homeland in 2004 with the 28th Summer Olympic Games in Athens. The competitions were hosted at various Olympic venues in Attica and other regions, while the shot put event was held ceremonially at the stadium of Ancient Olympia. A total of 10,625 athletes from 201 countries participated.
Greece won a total of 16 medals (6 gold, 6 silver, and 4 bronze), while at the Paralympic Games, which followed in September, it secured a total of 11 medals (1 gold, 3 silver, and 7 bronze). The hosting of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games was a particularly complex and demanding undertaking, requiring the extensive mobilization of the Greek economy and society, supported by an unprecedented wave of volunteerism. Greece received widespread acclaim for its impeccable organization and hospitality.
