North Carolina – 13th Issue of the American Innovation Series
The University of North Carolina became the first public university in the nation to officially open when classes were organized in 1795. It was the only state university to award degrees in the 18th century. To this day, the university confers doctoral degrees in educational leadership, marine biology, nursing practice, and psychology. The university also offers numerous distance-learning options.
The obverse depicts a stack of three schoolbooks with the inscription “FIRST PUBLIC UNIVERSITY” on the spine of the middle book. A lamp of knowledge rises above the books, and olive branches curve along the edge of the design.
The reverse depicts a side profile of the Statue of Liberty with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1.” The year of minting, the mint mark, and the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are engraved on the edge of the coins.
