Περιγραφή
Sacagawea was a Shoshone Native American woman who assisted the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition. From 1804 to 1806, while still a teenager, she guided explorers from the Northern Great Plains to the Pacific Ocean and back. The group was also accompanied by her husband and their son, who was born during the journey.
On the obverse of the 1-dollar coin, Sacagawea is depicted in three-quarter profile. On her back, Sacagawea carries Jean Baptiste, her young son. The inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of minting also appear.
The reverse depicts a rising eagle surrounded by 17 stars. The 17 stars represent each state of the Union at the time of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804. Inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
In 2009, the dollar was incorporated into the Native American $1 Coin Program, using the Sacagawea obverse in combination with a different reverse design each year.
