Περιγραφή
The first anti-discrimination law in the United States prohibiting discrimination in access to public spaces was passed by the Territorial Government of Alaska in 1945. Elizabeth Peratrovich (Tlingit Nation), through her advocacy for Alaska Natives alongside her husband Roy and a passionate speech before the Alaska Senate in support of the bill, is credited with helping secure its passage. The year 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of Elizabeth Peratrovich’s historic testimony in favor of the nation’s first anti-discrimination law.
The design of the obverse retains the central figure of the “Sacagawea” design, first issued in 2000. It depicts Sacagawea holding her infant son, Jean Baptiste, in her arms.
The reverse features a portrait of Elizabeth Peratrovich, whose advocacy was considered a crucial factor in the passage of the 1945 Anti-Discrimination Act by the Territorial Government of Alaska. In the foreground appears the symbol of the Tlingit Raven (Crow) clan, of which she was a member.
The Native American $1 Coin Program honors the contributions of Native American tribes and individual Native Americans to the history and development of the United States. The program began in 2009.
