1 U.S. Dollar 2018 – Native Americans – Jim Thorpe

As part of the U.S. commemorative coin series, a $1 coin was issued in honor of Jim Thorpe, a legendary athlete and Olympic champion, whose achievements in track and field, football, and baseball made him one of the greatest figures in the history of American sports.

Thorpe won gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Olympic Games, becoming the first person to achieve such a feat. In addition to track and field, he was a star of American football and played for professional baseball and basketball teams. In 1920, he became the first president of the National Football League (NFL).

The reverse of the coin depicts a portrait of Thorpe, along with two dynamic scenes illustrating his athletic achievements: on the left, he is shown running at the 1912 Olympic Games. On the right, he is depicted playing American football. The inscription “WA-THO-HUK” represents his name in the Sauk and Fox language. The coin bears the inscriptions “JIM THORPE” and “$1” at the top, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” at the bottom.
