Among the many plants of Greek nature, few can rival the beauty and splendor of wild peonies. Since antiquity, the peony has been celebrated as the “queen of all herbs,” owing to the unparalleled beauty of its large blossoms and its medicinal properties. Its antimicrobial and antiseptic properties have also been confirmed by modern studies. The ancient name “Paeonia” honors the healing god Paeon, who cured Hades of a wound inflicted by an arrow of Heracles, and Ares when he was wounded at Troy. In Greece, seven species of peony are found, of which Paeonia clusii (Crete, Karpathos, and Rhodes) and Paeonia parnassica (Mount Parnassus and Mount Helicon) are endemic to the country.
