The European Football Championship, more commonly known today as the Euro, has been organized by UEFA every four years since 1958 and is the premier competition among the national teams of European countries. The Greek national team qualified for the final stage of the tournament for the first time in 1980. At Euro 2004, held in Portugal from 12 June to 4 July 2004, Greece made a strong start with a victory over the host nation, Portugal. Eliminating the tournament favorites one after another, Greece advanced to the final, where it faced Portugal once again.

In a thrilling match, Greece won 1–0 and was crowned European champion. Upon returning to Greece with the trophy, the national team players and head coach Otto Rehhagel were acclaimed with a reception unprecedented in its scale and enthusiasm. It was a historic victory that placed Greece firmly on the international football map and, together with the hosting of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, indelibly marked the summer of 2004 in the national memory as a milestone in modern Greek sporting history.
